NOTICE OF KNOX® KEY BOX REQUIREMENT

2021 International Fire Code Section 506.1-506.2.: Where access to or within a structure or an area is restricted because of secured openings or where immediate access is necessary for lifesaving or firefighting purposes, the fire chief is authorized to require a key box to be installed in an approved location. The key box shall be of an approved type and shall contain keys to gain necessary access as required by the fire chief. An approved lock shall be installed on gates or similar barriers when required by the fire code official. 


The operator (responsible person) of the building shall immediately notify the fire chief and provide the new key when a lock is changed or rekeyed. The key to such lock shall be secured in the key box. 

Required Location.

 

All existing commercial buildings with FIRE ALARM AND/OR FIRE PROTECTION SPRINKLER SYSTEMS are required to install a “Knox® Box Rapid Entry System” key box in an approved location.  All new Commercial buildings (with or without fire alarm and/or fire protection systems) will be required to install a “Knox® Box Rapid Entry System” key box in an approved location. Entry keys/cards to all parts of the building are required to be placed in the key box and maintained in accordance with Section 506.2. 

Any residential properties within the Magnolia Springs VFD response area are welcomed and encouraged to install a residential “Knox® Box Rapid Entry System”.

Knox Box® key boxes can be ordered online at http://www.knoxbox.com/. Browse the Knox Box® key boxes that are available and choose the box that best fits your needs. To purchase, click on the "BUY" link located on the top right of the website; select Alabama from the drop-down box, type in MAGNOLIA SPRINGS VFD and click “Select Department” continue.  It is important if you live in the Magnolia Springs VFD Primary Response Area  ( see below section to see if you are in our response area) to make sure that you click on Magnolia Springs in this step because each municipality/fire department has a unique Knox Box® key.
